Refuse revenge and answer insult, coercion, and need with courageous generosity rather than retaliation.

Matthew 5:38–42

38 “You have heard that it was said, ‘An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth.’ 39 But I tell you, don’t resist him who is evil; but whoever strikes you on your right cheek, turn to him the other also. 40 If anyone sues you to take away your coat, let him have your cloak also. 41 Whoever compels you to go one mile, go with him two. 42 Give to him who asks you, and don’t turn away him who desires to borrow from you.

Jesus moves beyond equal retaliation and gives vivid examples of responding to insult, legal pressure, forced service, and requests without mirroring the aggressor’s spirit.

Listen carefully to what Jesus says.

  1. What does Jesus command?
  2. What does this passage reveal about Him?
  3. Where do we resist this command?
  4. What is difficult or unclear?
  5. How can Jesus’ examples interrupt revenge while still allowing truthful confrontation, protection of the vulnerable, and wise boundaries?

Choose one specific act of obedience.

Choose one conflict where you want to get even. Refuse the retaliatory response and take one wise, nonviolent step that serves peace without concealing harm or abandoning necessary boundaries.

What retaliatory impulse did you refuse, what alternative response did you choose, and did it move the situation toward truth and peace?
